What are the benefits to feeding my dog a salmon-based food?

Written by  Zoe Russell, BSc (Hons)

Our salmon diets are tried, tested and loved by many dogs! It’s no wonder really – especially when salmon can be a delicious alternative to meats (such as chicken or lamb) and has numerous health benefits when included in a dog’s diet. Are you unsure if salmon is the right choice for your dog? Then let us tell you a little bit more…

Look after your dog’s skin and coat

Salmon can provide a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help support coat and skin health, as well as providing a number of other benefits within the body. Dogs are incapable of producing these fatty acids on their own, so they need to get them through their food, meaning they are regarded as “essential” to ensure they stay fit and healthy. Our salmon dog food recipes provide a good source of these fatty acids, making them a popular choice for dogs needing support with their coat and skin health.

How to support your dog’s joints

Not only can salmon have benefits for coat and skin health, but it can also support joint condition. Omega-3 has anti-inflammatory properties, and has evidence to suggest it may support mobility and joint health. Oily fish such as salmon provide a great source of the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA*, which can be beneficial in promoting healthy movement and mobility. In case you thought that wasn’t enough, omega-3 fatty acids can also have benefits for heart, eye and cognitive health!

Does your dog require a sensitive food?

A salmon-based diet can be a great choice for dogs intolerant to poultry; in particular those intolerant to chicken-based diets. By creating a poultry-free recipe, our wet and dry foods made with salmon can be the perfect choice for dogs who need an alternative protein source to help satisfy their dietary needs.

Our Salmon with Steamed Veg wet food is also made to a grain-free recipe, so can be the perfect choice for dogs who cannot tolerate grains in their diet; and Field & Trial Salmon & Rice is made to a wheat-free recipe.

Balanced and complete

Both our wet and dry dog foods are nutritionally complete, meaning they provide the right nutrients in the right proportions to support the needs of healthy dogs. Being nutritionally complete, our wet and dry foods can either be fed alone, or together, to provide a mouth-watering feast.

Looking for the perfect salmon-based treat?

That’s not all! If you like the sound of the benefits that salmon can provide, give our Joint & Conditioning Treats a try! These delicious hand-baked biscuits contain salmon oil to help with coat and skin health, whilst also supporting the natural anti-inflammatory mechanism of the body.

Once your dog has enjoyed these tasty treats, the packaging is also fully recyclable, compostable, and can be recycled with your paper waste.
